Mazda Xedos 6: By name and patronymic
Mazda Xedos 6 – the most elegant modification of the model 626, produced from 1992 to 1997 exclusively in the sedan. This car can be bought both with the left-side that is customary for us and with the right-hand drive. True, the latter is called Mazda Eunos 500.
According to second-hand sellers, some people who want to own a Japanese car opt for the Mazda Xedos 6 mainly because of its design. By the way, Mazda representatives say that they wanted to make Xedos 6 not just a comfortable car, but a more sporty version of the 626th model.
Largely because of this, the dimensions of the Mazda Xedos 6 are slightly smaller than the Mazda 626, and its more modest trunk can hold only 405 liters of luggage. There is another drawback of the Xedos 6, which rarely thinks about when buying, very expensive body parts. The owner of the car when hit even in minor accidents is forced to spend decent money – each element like a headlight, door or front wing costs about $ 200-300. Often, “iron” for the Xedos 6 is more expensive than the same parts for some very prestigious German sedan. But now in Moscow and other large Russian cities, there are already “disassemblies” specializing in Mazda, where there are spare parts for Xedos 6. Another thing to note is that the headlights on the Xedos 6 are far from the best – there are many complaints about the low beam. And, perhaps, the only way to solve this problem – to put “xenon”.
The corrosion resistance of the Mazda Xedos 6 is not in doubt – even cars made at the very beginning of the 90s have no rust marks, and their presence usually indicates the past crash of the car. Require the exhaust system of the same fortress is not worth it. As practice shows, at the moment on most Xedos 6 there are non-original silencers, which are only enough for 2-3 years. Branded serve much longer, however, the price is pretty decent.
Salon Mazda Xedos 6, as a rule, is equipped with much richer than the standard “sixes”. According to the masters, all electric drives of the Xedos 6 are very reliable, even on the machines of the early years of release, they usually work without problems. Although the control unit window may break. This is due to a constructive deficiency – water may get into the unit during rain (therefore when it drips from the sky, it is better to open doors or glass less often). Sometimes the air conditioner “fumbles”, more precisely, its compressor, which first begins to emit very nasty sounds, and then stops working altogether. It is unrealistic to repair it, and buying a used one is pure lottery (according to the masters, the ratio of “live” and “dead” second-time compressors is 30/70). So when you hear a crash, get ready to pay about $ 500-600.
Despite the fact that «Mazda» positioned the Xedos 6 as a more prestigious and sporty version of the Mazda 626, this sedan did not have really powerful engines. After all, under the hood Xedos 6, intended for the European market, put a 4-cylinder engine of 1.6 liters capacity of 107 hp (a small part of the units gave out 113 hp) and 2-liter V6, which had 140 hp (in the period from 1992 to 1994 – 144 hp). And that’s it! No other engines for this model were envisaged, although the same Mazda 626 GE model of 1992-1997 was equipped with a 2.5-liter engine (163-165 hp). Why Xedos 6 limited only 140 “horses”, it remains only to guess. There was no Xedos 6 and all-wheel drive system with center and rear differentials, and in fact the 626th model had these very useful “bells and whistles”. By the way, there was no all-wheel drive on the Japanese Eunos 500, although on the “right-handed” cars already put more powerful engines of 1.8 liters (140 hp) and 2.0 liters (160 hp).
When buying a Mazda Xedos 6 is best to prefer a 2-liter unit. According to the masters, if necessary, this motor delivers significantly less problems than its 1.6-liter “brother” (there are many spare parts, and sometimes they are cheaper). In addition, the power of the V6 is enough for a more or less fast drive, and even with an automatic gearbox (although, as you understand, 140 hp on such a large car cannot provide a truly incendiary ride). If you get Xedos 6 with a 1.6-liter engine and “automatic” in good condition, then, of course, you can take it, but in this case we must remember that such a machine will be quite “sluggish.”
All power units installed on the Xedos 6 are reliable and can operate from 300 to 500 thousand km. And then, most likely, the need to replace rings, valve seals and gaskets ($ 800-1,200 with work). Of the required technical work, it is necessary to note the need to install a new timing belt every 100 thousand km. This procedure on a 2-liter engine is quite expensive ($ 80-90 work, plus $ 380 for parts), because with the belt here you need to buy a large number of a variety of rollers, and the work itself is more complicated.
